Haven of Light CIC / Hafan o Oleuni

Haven of Light is a non-profit organisation based in North Wales, UK.    We are also involved anti-slavery / human trafficking initiatives with partners on an international level, with a particular focus on work in Europe.

Haven of Light was established by Ali Ussery, who has worked in international aid and development initiatives since 1990. Initially, she spent time in NE Romania following the fall of communism, and introduced health care, education and community development projects working in collaboration with local teams. In 1998 Alison and her husband Nate joined a national team in Croatia and developed a 'reconciliation project' following the Balkan conflict. Their work has continued within that region for over 20 years, and they are part of a large collaborative network of organisations and individuals who are working in humanitarian, education and leadership initiatives.  Alison sits on the board of the 'European Freedom Network' and works closely with organisations and networks throughout Europe.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine we have taken on a role with local partners in Wales to develop and manage a project to support refugees who come to this area.  We are in talks with Welsh Govt. churches, faith and community groups, health and education, in an effort to provide all necessary practical and emotional support to the families who need help at this time.

We work at a grass-roots level within the communities of the six counties of North Wales, along with partners in the third sector, civil society and faith groups.  Together, we focus on informing those around us about the realities of modern slavery.  As members of society everyone has a role that they can play in making a stand against this very serious crime.  Our priorities include protecting those who are vulnerable, including our young people and preventing exploitation.  We also believe in the importance of supporting individuals who have experienced the abuse of modern slavery.  These people have the right to a free life and we want to enable them to have every opportunity to thrive.  We liaise with the Anti-Slavery Leadership Team in Wales, and represent the third sector on the North Wales Vulnerability and Exploitation Board, which includes statutory, local authority, law enforcement, and third sector agencies.
