Modern Slavery
Understanding the Reality of Exploitation in Our Communities and Worldwide
The global picture

Modern slavery is a serious crime and a violation of human rights, affecting millions of people across the world today. It includes practices such as human trafficking, forced labour, debt bondage, sexual exploitation, forced criminality and forced marriage. It happens when a person is forced, coerced or deceived into a situation where they are exploited by someone who intends to benefit or profit from their abuse.
Modern slavery often hides behind legitimate systems, supply chains and economic structures. This makes it difficult to detect and traps people in cycles of poverty, vulnerability and abuse. In 2022, the International Labour Organisation estimated that 50 million people were living in conditions of modern slavery. Of these, 28 million were in forced labour and 22 million in forced marriage.
